Below, we have compiled some helpful information so you know what to expect before and after you begin classes.

Technology Tips

Utilizing the right technology throughout your enrollment will help ensure your experience is as seamless as possible. We recommend technology that meets the following specifications:

Computer

  • At least 4GB RAM (8GB ideal) with a 2Ghz Dual Core or faster processor
  • Mac Users: OS X 10.8 or higher
  • PC Users: Windows 7 or higher

Internet

  • A hard-wired Ethernet connection is preferred over Wi-Fi.
  • Speeds no less than 5 Mbps download and 2 Mbps for upload are required. Ideal speeds are 10 Mbps for download and 5 Mbps for upload.
  • You need the latest version of at least two Internet browsers on your computer – we recommend Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Ensure that browsers are updated.

Phone and Webcam

  • Use a headset with landline phone or mobile device with earbuds or non-VOIP landline.
  • Do not use speakerphone.
  • An internal or external webcam is required.

Classroom Etiquette

While attending online classes, you are expected to demonstrate the same etiquette as students attending classes on campus. Each session requires your full attention. Here are some guidelines to follow when preparing to attend online classes:

Gather the Required Technology

Each of your classes will take place in a virtual classroom that requires an Internet connection to access. Ensure that you have a strong, reliable Internet connection, as a faulty connection could cause you to miss key information or prevent you from participating in class activities. We recommend that you use an Ethernet cord for a hardwired connection during each class.

You must access the virtual classroom with a desktop or laptop computer that has a webcam – classes may not be taken on a smartphone or a tablet. During each class, you will have access to live technical support should you have any questions.

Attend Each Live Class Session

Attendance at live class sessions is mandatory throughout your enrollment to ensure that you receive a rigorous counselor education. Faculty are willing to work with you in the event of an emergency, but otherwise, you are expected to participate in each live session.

Show respect for your classmates and faculty by logging in to classes on time and wearing appropriate attire. We recommend that you log in at least a few minutes before classes start to give yourself enough time to connect to the live session, audio, and video. Professional dress is not required, but do wear clothing that is appropriate for an academic setting.

Find an Appropriate Location

The location you choose affects not only your learning experience but also that of your classmates. Plan ahead so you have access to a place that is relatively quiet and well-lit and has little background noise. Try to avoid distractions such as other people walking in and out of your webcam view.

Practice Good On-Camera Etiquette

Throughout each class, ensure that your camera is directly facing you so your entire face appears on the screen. Remember that everyone in the virtual classroom can see everything you are doing and everything going on behind you within view of your webcam. Avoid eating meals and doing other activities that could be distracting to your peers and professors.
