The Counseling@NYU curriculum includes one in-person immersion on the NYU campus in New York City for students in the Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling programs. The immersion allows you to practice the skills gained in class under the supervision and guidance of NYU faculty and your peers.
The immersion is a component of the Group Dynamics: Theory and Practice course. With your classmates and faculty, you will observe and participate in group therapy sessions, which will give you first-hand knowledge of how groups function and flourish. You will better understand how emotions, behavior, and thought all contribute to a group’s success and be prepared to effectively manage group therapy sessions in your career as a counselor.
Counseling@NYU’s immersion experience supplements the online learning experience, giving you the unique chance to:
Strengthen connections with faculty and peers formed online
Get to know NYU’s campus and the NYU Steinhardt community
Connect in person with professors and program leadership
Practice counseling skills developed through classes and course work
Experience the diversity and culture of New York City
Complete DASA (Dignity of All Students Act) training to help keep school environments free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying*
*Only applies to students in the master’s in Counseling and Guidance program.
