School Counseling Licensure

The New York University’s Counseling and Guidance: School and Bilingual School Counseling, Pre-K-12 prepares students to work as a school counselor in elementary, middle and high schools, and as a child advocate in community-based organizations.

Licensed school counselors are critical resources for children and their families, assisting students to achieve their goals. School counselors are vital in helping students in the areas of academic achievement, social/personal development, ensuring today’s students become the productive, and successful adults of tomorrow.

This program leads to eligibility for New York State certification as a school counselor for grades pre-K-12.

Students may also be eligible for certification in other states outside of New York, however, certification requirements differ from state to state. Most state licensing boards require a master’s degree, testing, and potentially additional post-graduate coursework requirements.
