School Counseling Licensure
Master of Arts in School Counseling
The 48-51 credit (51 credits for students enrolled in the bilingual track) program leads to a master of arts in School Counseling, as well as eligibility for New York State certification as a school counselor for grades pre-K-12. The designed outcome is to lead to eligibility to be recommended for a New York State Initial Certificate, School Counselor. Additionally, students of the program’s bilingual track will be eligible to take the Bilingual Educational Assessment, and upon graduation, will be eligible to be recommended for a New York State Bilingual Education Extension (PPS/Admin). The Bilingual Education Extension is only for New York State. Other states might not have this designation.
Students may also be eligible for certification in other states outside of New York, though these requirements may vary from state to state. We encourage each student to research and understand the specific requirements for certification for their state of residence. Resources for each state’s licensing board can be found on NYU Steinhardt’s Professional Licensure page.
Master of Arts in School Counseling with Advanced Certificate in School Counseling
The 60-63 credit program (the final 3 credits of which are for students enrolled in the bilingual track) leads to a master of arts in School Counseling with an Advanced Certificate in School Counseling. The designed outcome of the dual program is to lead to eligibility to be recommended for New York State Initial Certificate, School Counselor. The program is also designed to meet the additional 12-credit requirement for Professional Certificate in order to continue practicing within New York State. Graduates who choose to pursue the Professional Certificate must also complete any other remaining steps to obtain this certification as outlined by the New York State Department of Education.
