What to Expect

Immersions are a vital component of the Counseling@NYU experience. Students in the mental health counseling program are required to attend one in-person immersion on the NYU campus in New York City. The immersion provides an opportunity to practice skills in a supervised yet real-world environment.

3 Days

Small Group Sessions

Faculty/Peer Discussions

Observe, Participate, and Learn

The immersion is a component of the Group Dynamics: Theory and Practice course. Along with your classmates, you will learn from expert professors to develop an understanding of the group process theory and the underlying practice dynamics of group counseling for children, adolescents, and adults.

What you will gain

Counseling@NYU’s immersion experience supplements the online experience, giving students in-person connections and practical counseling experience.

Strengthen connections with faculty and peers

Immersions are an excellent opportunity to build a sense of community within the Counseling@NYU program. Students travel from across the country to attend the immersion, during which they build on the relationships and skills developed during the live online class sessions.

Explore NYU’s campus and the NYU Steinhardt community

While on campus, you will receive your NYU student ID and tour our New York City campus. You’re an important part of the NYU Steinhardt community, and we want you to feel at home.

Meet professors and program leadership

Students benefit greatly from making personal connections with the professors who lead their classes, as well as the program leaders who develop the curriculum with you in mind. It is a great opportunity to ask questions and gain insight on the program’s inner workings.

Practice skills developed through online classes and course work

Along with the foundation built in online course work, students gain a greater understanding of nonverbal skills within small groups and continue this hands-on experience through roundtable discussions.

Experience the diversity and culture of New York City

The NYU campus is located in the heart of New York City, and immersions are a great opportunity to explore all the city has to offer. On campus, visit NYU’s Bobst Library and Washington Square Arch.

Complete Dignity of All Students Act (DASA) training

During the immersion, students in the Counseling and Guidance program will complete DASA training, which helps keep school environments free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying.
