Counseling@NYU offers accredited online graduate degree programs from NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Applied Psychology. Both our online master of arts program in Counseling and Guidance and our online master of arts program in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness prepare you to help all people – children, individuals, and families – create lives full of wellness, health, and meaning.
Counseling@NYU combines interactive online classes, real-world training experiences, and course work designed to accommodate your personal schedule and needs. Courses focus on theory and practical application and are taught by distinguished NYU Steinhardt faculty. We aim to employ all aspects of psychology throughout a variety of real-world settings, including the school, home, classroom, and community.
MA in Counseling and Guidance
Counseling@NYU offers a master of arts in Counseling and Guidance: School and Bilingual School Counseling, Grades Pre-K-12.
This online program prepares aspiring school counselors to become collaborative leaders in elementary, middle, and high schools across the country. As a student, you will take courses that feature principles of equity, social justice, and an understanding of pre-K–12 students from diverse cultural contexts. You’ll gain knowledge of counseling research and practice through course work, a counseling lab, practicum, and internship experiences at schools in or near your community.

School Counseling Certification
New York University’s master of arts in Counseling and Guidance: School and Bilingual School Counseling program prepares students to work as a school counselor in elementary, middle, and high schools, and as a child advocate in community-based organizations.
Certified school counselors are critical resources for children and their families, assisting students to achieve their goals. School counselors play a vital role in helping students achieve academic success and social/personal development, ensuring today’s students become the productive, successful adults of tomorrow.
This program leads to eligibility for New York state certification as a school counselor for grades pre-K–12.
Students may also be eligible for certification in states outside of New York; however, certification requirements differ from state to state. Most state certification boards require a master’s degree, testing, and potentially additional postgraduate course work requirements. We encourage students to research the requirements specific to their resident state.
MA in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness
Counseling@NYU offers a master of arts in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness.
This online program prepares students to help people of all ages create lives of wellness, health, and meaning. You will receive the knowledge and clinical training required to become a licensed mental health counselor working in mental health centers, addiction treatment centers, community agencies, nonprofits, hospitals, and private practice.
Through the program, you will learn to serve diverse communities and help individuals and families achieve mental health and wellness, leading to healthier lifestyles. You’ll study counseling foundations, theory, and process through your course work, a counseling lab, practicum, and internship training at mental health sites near your community.
As a Counseling@NYU student in the mental health and wellness counseling program, you will be prepared to be a leader and a facilitator working in the community as an advocate for healthy living and social justice.
Mental Health Counseling Licensure
The master of arts in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness prepares students to work as mental health counselors, serving as leaders, facilitators, and advocates of social justice in diverse communities across the country.
Counseling@NYU is registered by New York State as a license-qualifying program in mental health counseling.
Students may be eligible for licensure in states outside New York; however, requirements vary from state to state. Most state licensing boards require a master’s degree, testing, and completion of post-master’s clinical hours. We encourage students to research the requirements for licensure specific to their state of residence.
